Reading the rarity table without fooling yourself
Rarity score is one number and it hides a lot. What it does and does not tell you.
Every piece on this site shows a rarity rank. It is a useful number and it is also easy to over-read, so here is what it actually means.
What the score is
For each trait a piece carries, we take the total supply divided by how many pieces share that trait, then sum across the piece's traits. A trait held by ten pieces out of a thousand contributes 100. A trait held by four hundred contributes 2.5. Rare traits dominate the sum, which is the intent.
What it is not
It is not a price, and it is not taste. The scoring method treats every category as equally important, so a rare marking counts the same as a rare piece of headwear even though one is far more visible. Two pieces ten ranks apart can look nothing alike in terms of desirability.
It also cannot see combinations. A piece whose traits happen to work together beautifully scores no higher than one whose traits fight, if the underlying weights match.
How to use it
Use rank to find the unusual pieces quickly, then use your eyes. The set is a thousand items; you can look at all of them in a few minutes on the collection page, sorted however you like.
